Dream come true

So much for what I said about never putting pictures of me making funny faces on the blog!

I'm pretty amazed to say, that my life-long (literally) dream of having straight hair came true today, thanks to a recent (1990s) breakthrough in the hair world.  It is now permanently straight, and I will have to literally cut off my hair to get rid of the straightness.  Even though it put a $400 dent in my bank account, it's going to be worth it.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but my hair is so thick that it's enough for two people.  On top of that, it is curly, and frizzy like you wouldn't believe  (these pictures make it look nice because I slept on my wet hair last night).  In the last eight years (since I was 13, when I discovered flatirons), I've straightened my hair 3+ times a week, and when you add all of that up, you get about 1,250 times (minimum) that I've straightened my hair.  That is a LOT.  I've cut off nearly all of my hair twice (it fell about two inches above my shoulders) to donate it, primarily because my hair was that unmanageable.  You're reading that right: I've cut off my hair multiple times because I simply couldn't deal with putting hours of work into my hair whenever I wanted to wear it down.  I'm not exaggerating when I say hours plural.

My mom says that I'm going to miss my curly hair, and I won't lie when I say that I already do a little bit, knowing I won't see it again for a long time.  That's when I have to remind myself about all of the endless hours I put into straightening it, and all of the damage I've done to it by doing that; when I remind myself about always muttering under my breath about how much I hate my hair, and all those countless mornings I lay in bed mentally debating whether to get up and do my hair or to skip it and lie there for another hour.

As for what's coming up next for my hair: I'm planning on dying it red - something like this, maybe a little darker (despite the way the sun plays on it, right now it's the same color as my curly hair) - and maybe getting bangs.  I was eight years old the last time I had bangs, and it was a disaster because of my hair type.  Always been bitter about that.  So, now that my hair is straight, I might give it a go!  Something like this or this.  Let's hear your thoughts!  I need help deciding.  :)   xx

  1. Oh it's so pretty! I used to have super long thick wavy hair. It never ever looked good natural. So I'd have to straighten it ALL or curl it. It literally took me an hour to just straighten it then I'd have to style it. And I'm lazy. Ain't nobody got time for that! ;) Anyways I chopped off like ten inches and I can finally wear it natural. I've thought about getting it permanently straightened., but I'm scared ill regret it. Plus my hair grows out at an abnormally fast pace so it wouldn't last long.. Maybe you could do a follow up post in a few weeks/months? Let us know how you like it? Sorry for the rambles haha. xx | Natalia.

  3. Oh my gosh! Your hair type sounds exactly like mine! :P I have those moments all the time when I'm like "I hate my hair, I hate my hair, I hate my hair!" My sister and I are the only ones in our whole entire extended family whose gotten this type of hair, and it makes me feel like some kind of outsider, like my cousins are gossiping about how weird and unnatural my hair is behind my back. (I'm sure that that's just me being paranoid, but still) I always have to constantly watch my hair, to make sure it turns out right. I have recently discovered mousse, and it is a miracle! But I've also just tried getting bangs (I too had bangs when I was seven, and it just didn't work with my hair) and I love them, but if I don't straiten them at the right moment in the right way they stick out in all unnatural ways.

well, there's my hair woes. :P Your hair looks really good straight! And I agree with Natalia, go for the bangs! :D

  4. I've also got curly hair - not nearly as thick as yours though. I wash it two times a week maximum because it always looks better once it's slept on. I do like the straight hair. As for the bangs - I guess it depends on how fast your hair grows - I remember in middle school people were growing out their bangs and it took FOREVER and they got really sick of it then. I definitely like the red though. I love having fun with hair :) mine's been the same way for a while now, I just need to figure out what to do next...

  5. it looks great! I keep putting off straightening my hair with a flat iron, I don't want to deal with it daily. so I keep it curly, although I wish it was more curly to look better! right now it's just kind of a mess.

  10. HOLY CRAP. Your hair is seriously so gorgeous. I have pretty obnoxiously thick hair but I had a friend who had thick hair like yours and she hated it. Also, the confidence radiating from your 'after' pictures with straight hair is obvious. <3
